Ten Cool Companies that we Do Not Hear Enough About

*
*
The technology press, to us, sometimes seems so caught up in covering Google, Facebook and then every little "new new thing" that they miss exciting growth stories, in particular those companies who don't have famous investors or are not located in an entrepreneurial center. Here are some companies we think don't get the headlines in Silicon Valley, but they are building interesting businesses.
Highlights
  • 10 cool companies that should get press, but don't!
  • Coupons.com distributed $1.2B worth of coupons in the past year, up 41% year over year.
  • Nextag is the number one shopping engine in terms of gross volume.
  • With $22.5M in 2010 revenue and a 27 year old founder you would think that Volusion would get some Silicon Valley press. It hasn’t.

Rank Company Momentum Index What You Should Know
1 78.4 With all the focus on Groupon, people have forgotten that the digital coupon has been around for a decade. Coupons.com dominates the space, having distributed $1.2B worth of coupons in the past year, which is up 41% year over year. They grew their employee base 50% in 2010.
2 76.1 Nextag is the number one shopping engine in terms of gross volume and is so profitable that they were recently pursuing a $250M debt line to make acquisitions and pay a dividend. We imagine now that the IPO window is wide open, Nextag might reassess this strategy.
3 72.4 With $22.5M in 2010 revenue and a 27 year old founder one would think that Volusion’s success in ecommerce would get some attention in the Silicon Valley press. It hasn?t. Volusion is a great bootstrap story.
